The Industrial Design Outreach (iDo) is pleased to announce the release of a video documentary of their collaboration with Thurgood Marshall Academic High School students in the creation of a Community Bench. The documentary was released for worldwide viewing through YouTube's online distribution network. Students, educators and design education enthusiasts can learn about the problems and successes encountered during development of the Community Bench.
In the fall of 2007, students from San Francisco State University's Industrial Design Outreach (iDo) program began a collaborative design effort with the students at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. This project introduced Thurgood Marshall Academic High School students to the basics of design and fabrication. The bench integrates ergonomic, semiotic, and manufacturing subject matter into hands-on learning. Students were trained in computer design programs, rapid model prototyping, and the use of power equipment to make final parts of the bench. A $10,000 grant from the Miranda Lux Foundation provided materials, tools and faculty support.
Release of this video is the first in a series intended to provide outreach to students and educators. By sharing classroom experiences, it is intended to encourage academia to develop design and creative problem solving curriculum that brings hand craftsmanship and traditional tool skill-sets back into the classroom. iDo believes that by providing experiential learning opportunities such as design based projects, lifelong skills such as self-esteem, self-confidence and problem solving are learned.
All videos produced by the Industrial Design Outreach program are available on the iDo website by going to "In the Classroom" and clicking on "Videos".
Special Thanks to Dylan Garrett for editing and producing this film.
